What ModernRetire does not model

Educational planner only — not financial, tax, or legal advice. See Disclaimers.

Last reviewed against the planner codebase: June 2026.

Social Security and benefits

  • Full SSA rules engine (simplified claiming, deeming, survivor paths)
  • Earnings test applies in the main timeline when you have pre-FRA wages, but not inside the SS Optimizer claim-age grid
  • Divorced-spouse fields exist on Profile → Benefits, but the main projection and SS Optimizer use own/spousal Social Security only — ex-spouse inputs are saved for reference and are not wired into the timeline yet
  • Gov pension survivor % is user-entered only — no plan-specific survivor options or COLA on the survivor stream
  • Restricted application / legacy cohort edge cases
  • Automatic SSA statement import

Medicare / IRMAA / ACA

  • SS Optimizer IRMAA: non-SS MAGI from your active plan; taxable SS varies by claim age — not a full per-scenario recalc of withdrawals and conversions
  • IRMAA ranking may show “IRMAA deferred” when pre-SS MAGI is insufficient
  • Monte Carlo: Medicare costs not fully aligned with the deterministic timeline
  • ACA: nationwide CMS approximations; not all state child-premium curves
  • Medicare enrollment timing / Part B late-enrollment penalties

Tax and withdrawals

  • State tax: many states use simplified fractions, not full AGI phaseouts; no local/city tax
  • State LTCG gaps: short-term gains; VT 3-year holding rule; OK 100% asset exclusion; MT tiered cap-gains optional gap; WA threshold tax only (not full estate/local)
  • Mid-plan state change: single residence for all years — model moves via duplicate Compare scenarios
  • Every Roth conversion / ACA / IRMAA interaction edge case
  • 72(t) SEPP: RMD-style and amortization methods exist; IRS Table 4 annuitization is not modeled
  • Exact quarterly tax payments / safe-harbor mechanics
  • Per-lot tax tracking: taxable brokerage uses aggregate cost basis, not individual tax lots (FIFO, specific-ID)
  • Wash-sale rule: not enforced — gain harvest recommendations do not check 30-day repurchase windows
  • Dividend income is not separately itemized; approximate via portfolio return assumptions

Real estate and assets

  • Rentals: up to two properties with simplified tax — not a full per-property engine
  • No optimizer for optimal multi-property sale timing
  • Primary home: sell, hold, and downsize are modeled on Profile → Real estate. Not modeled: multi-step moves (sell → rent → buy), separate mortgages on a replacement home

Household and life events

  • Full long-term care survivor benefit modeling on all panels (partial LTC inputs)
  • Every estate / trust / step-up edge case beyond current TCJA / heir panels
  • Wages and pre-retirement employment detail (retirement-focused product)

Product and data

  • Cloud sync: guests Local only; signed-in free = cloud backup for the active plan plus up to 3 named scenario snapshots; beta / premium / lifetime unlock unlimited compare scenarios (plus 4 Roth variants in Compare)
  • Sage is not a licensed advisor; may be wrong or unavailable
  • Historical returns / annuity tables are approximate

Repealed / no longer modeled

  • WEP and GPO (Social Security Fairness Act). Non-SS pension is income with optional survivor %
